We are here to help

We’re in-network with most major insurance companies and also offer lower self-pay fees through select staff.

When our brain becomes overwhelmed, it is unable to process what’s happening in its usual way. As a result, memories, emotions, and physical sensations can get “stuck,” leading to ongoing distress. This can happen because your body’s natural fight, flight, or freeze response kicks in, shifting your brain into survival mode instead of fully processing the experience. EMDR can help replace negative associations with past trauma, painful memories, and spiraling thought patterns, allowing your brain and body to heal after distress is removed.

EMDR uses forms of left-right stimulation to help the brain process and reframe distressing memories. It works with the brain’s natural ability to heal, helping people feel less overwhelmed by past events. Research has shown that EMDR is especially effective for conditions like PTSD, and it’s widely recognized as a proven method for those who haven’t found relief through other therapies.

At CCFAM, our experienced counselors understand how life circumstances can affect both your mind and body. Through supportive, evidence-based approaches like EMDR, your counselor will guide you through working safely and effectively with these overwhelming experiences. EMDR can help with anxiety, depression, PTSD, traumatic incidents, and other symptoms, reducing their intensity and supporting your journey toward lasting healing.

The EMDR Therapy Process

individual-counseling-goal-setting
Goal Setting

Like talk therapy, EMDR begins with gaining a history of your needs and life experiences to determine what type of counseling would be most effective for you. Together, we will explore how these challenges may be affecting your daily life and collaborate on a counseling plan–whether that’s individual talk therapy sessions or EMDR sessions, or a combination of both.

EMDR Preparation

If you decide to incorporate EMDR, you will learn more about what to expect in sessions, experience relaxation exercises, and learn tools to use outside of sessions.

Identifying Triggers

After you are equipped with exercises and tools, you will assess the images, negative thoughts, feelings, and sensations from previous triggers that are impacting your daily life.

Bilateral Stimulation

Bilateral stimulation works in a way that’s similar to the eye movements that occur during REM sleep when we dream. It’s like being on a train, watching the scenery pass by, while new images, thoughts, feelings, and sensations come and go in your mind. This process helps your brain reprocess memories and emotions, allowing you to make sense of them in a more balanced and less overwhelming way.

Strengthen Positive Associations

EMDR guides you to replace negative past experiences with positive beliefs, emotions, and sensations.

Length of EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy can be offered as a stand-alone treatment or integrated alongside traditional talk therapy sessions. The counseling process is highly individualized, as each person’s needs and healing journey are unique.

Many clients begin to notice meaningful changes within 10 to 14 sessions; however, the pace of progress can vary. To help you reach meaningful change within 10–14 sessions, we recommend starting with weekly appointments.

Some individuals may experience relief sooner, while others may benefit from a longer course of therapy. Factors such as appointment frequency, personal temperament, and current life stressors all play a role in determining the timeline for change.

Bilateral Stimulation Explanation

Bilateral stimulation is a therapeutic technique that rhythmically activates both sides of the brain and body. It is often used in treatments like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to help clients process distressing thoughts, emotions, or memories in a safe and structured way.

The goal of bilateral stimulation is to reduce the emotional intensity associated with distressing experiences and promote healing by supporting the brain’s natural ability to process and integrate information.

With adults, bilateral stimulation may include:

  • Guided eye movements – tracking movement from left to right
  • Tactile stimulation – such as alternating taps on the hands or using hand-held pulsers
  • Auditory tones – alternating sounds in each ear through headphones

Many clients describe bilateral stimulation as calming or soothing, often noting a sense of relief or greater clarity after its use.
