SHIRLEY  MOXLEY

Hello, I’m Shirley Moxley, LPC-S (Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor). I have been a professional counselor for over twenty years and have worked in private practice, group practice, church-based practice, and juvenile justice.

I have experience with individuals, both male and female, groups, couples, teens, adults, and families during my career. I started my career working with clients with sexual trauma and have been working in trauma ever since. I have worked with people who have trauma of all kinds in their backgrounds, including sexual, legal, religious, medical, natural disaster, and caretaker trauma; family of origin; domestic violence; first responders; military; change of life; grief and other losses; and human trafficking. In addition to all the work in trauma, I’ve also worked in addiction counseling, life skills, vocational guidance, and teaching.

I graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor’s degree in English and then attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where I earned one Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy and another in Religious Education. I also started my PhD at Southwestern and then transferred to B.H. Carroll Theological Institute. I have not completed my dissertation but hope to do so in the future. I worked in a number of industries before changing gears in my forties, including human resources, accounting, management, and running my own businesses.

When I’m not in my office, I enjoy spending time with my three adult children, all of whom live in the metroplex, my five grandchildren (mostly teenagers), my special needs grandson who has Down syndrome and autism, and my dog, Duke, an eleven-month-old Husky/Great Pyrenees mix who has a thing for stealing shoes. I also enjoy music, movies, and Audible books

My Counseling Approach

Shirley Moxley Profile Picture

I very much believe in a collaborative approach to therapy and, as such, I try to come alongside my clients and help them find the answers to life’s challenges. I am committed to empowering those willing to make a change with the tools needed for long-term fulfillment. I take a flexible approach so I can provide therapy that works for you. I have a small, cozy office that my clients seem to enjoy, where you can feel safe and not judged.

In my work I have used a number of approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Trauma-Focused Talk Therapies, and EMDR. I have also used Person-Centered, Narrative Therapy, Gottman Counseling Techniques for Couples Therapy, and a wide range of trauma focused therapies. I am also a certified anger management specialist.

I am a Christian and enjoy working from a Christian perspective, but I am not limited to this perspective. I try to respect my clients’ experience and preference in how we approach therapy and have worked with people from many faith backgrounds, including those who are not people of faith.
